The DVD is available in two video standards: PAL and NTSC. Please check the following site to see what video standard is used in the country you live in (NTSC, PAL or SECAM, for SECAM countries purchase PAL): http://www.hometechanswers.com/video/wwstandards1.html (for example, USA and Canada is NTSC, most of Europe is PAL or SECAM).
The main film is 45 minutes long (see [Spiral Galaxy album on Vimeo] for a preview). On the DVD there are six extra's, with a total length of 30 minutes:
- Trailer.
- Prof. Blaauw's memories from his time and work with the Photographic Telescope at the Old Leiden Observatory.
- Prof. van Woerden's memories of his time at the Leiden Observatory and further details about his part in the unravelling of the Milky Way (1944 - 1956).
- Additional explanation about the Star Streams that Jacobus Kapteyn discovered in 1904.
- A more detailed explanation about how the positions of the hydrogen gas clouds in the Galaxy are determined from radio astronomical observations (watch this extra feature on Vimeo [Spiral Galaxy album on Vimeo]).
- A summary of the impact the first maps of the Galaxy had on the astronomical community and beyond.
The DVD has the option of menus and subtitles in English, Dutch and German. The main film also has the option for Stereo or Dolby Digital Surround 5.1 sound.
